Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) launched extensive discussions concerning major improvements that could be made to the classical process of aluminum production. The aim of these dicussions is not only to increase the productivity and reduce support costs but also to reduce the footprint of the manufacturing process.
Among these improvements, the use of autonomous ground vehicles for heavy load delivery was identified as a very promising and innovative approach.
ECA Group, by the strong skill in robotics and in development of electrical complex vehicles, has been chosen to develop the heavy load autonomous vehicle and to deliver a couple of series vehicles.
The first MAX 2.0 vehicle will be set up in the Dunkirk Aluminum smelter in France.
Each unmanned vehicle has its own route plan, which encompasses the loading zone, the delivery area and the path. The robot shall navigate indoors and outdoors.
ECA Group is also in charge for developping the supervision software which will manage the fleet of autonomous vehicles inside each smelter.
