December 2015, Mistral 4000 Full Mission Bridge Simulator installed in ECA Group premises in Genova, has been used by an Italian LPG shipping company to train its Masters and Deck Officers in Ship to-Ship (STS) transfer operations. Mistral 4000 full mission bridge simulator allows an accelerated and intensive experience in a safe and controlled environment risk free emergency response training and interiorizing of shipboard procedures.

Ship-to-ship (STS) transfer operation is the transfer of cargo between seagoing ships, positioned alongside each other, either while stationary or underway. Cargoes typically transferred via STS methods include crude oil, liquefied gas, and petroleum products.  Sometimes it can be useful to transfer cargo from one ship to another in the open sea and this is called a ship-to-ship operation. The nomenclature STS is normally used in reference to techniques used by civilian merchant vessels.

ECA Group offered a support with its training Simulator Mistral 4000 and its capability  to simulate complex and various scenarios in which the seafarers are called to work.

Training exercises are conducted on Full Mission Shiphandling Simulator covering different Ship-to-Ship (STS) maneuvers, mooring and unmooring, use and control of main engine, rudders, thrusters and Ship to ship interaction, navigation & maneuvering in port and at sea, and docking & undocking in various conditions and transfer operations.

The operation has been conducted taking into account the information contained in the best practice guidelines for STS operations as identified by the international Maritime Organization (IMO) taking full account of the STCW Code adopted by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers as amended, including the Manila amendments 2010.
