What is a PM FIBER?
(Polarization Maintaining Fiber)
A Polarization Maintaining (PM) fiber is an optical fiber designed to preserve the polarization state of light as it propagates through the fiber. It uses a highly birefringent fiber structure to maintain two stable polarization axes, minimizing unwanted changes in polarization caused by external disturbances.
By maintaining a stable polarization state, a PM fiber provides consistent and precise optical performance in systems where polarization directly affects measurement accuracy or signal quality. It is particularly important for interferometric and polarization-sensitive applications, including fiber-optic gyroscopes and optical current sensors.
HOW a Polarization Maintaining Fiber Works
The polarization-maintaining behavior of the fiber relies on three key characteristics
High birefringence
The fiber has two principal polarization axes with different propagation constants, creating a stable separation between the polarization modes.
Controlled polarization
Light launched along one of the fiber's principal axes remains predominantly aligned with that axis, limiting polarization coupling during propagation.
Environmental stability
PM fibers are designed to reduce the impact of temperature, vibration, bending, and mechanical stress on the polarization state, enabling reliable performance in precision sensing systems.
