What are Radiation-Hardened Components?

Radiation-hardened components are optical or electronic components designed to maintain their performance when exposed to ionizing radiation. In photonics, radiation can affect materials and devices by causing attenuation, degradation, or permanent changes in optical and electrical properties.

Radiation-hardened components are therefore essential for systems operating in space, nuclear environments, and other radiation-intensive applications, where long-term reliability is critical.

HOW Radiation-Hardened Components Work

Radiation-hardened components are designed or manufactured to minimize performance degradation caused by radiation exposure. This can involve material selection, fiber and component design, manufacturing processes, and qualification testing under representative radiation conditions.

Radiation exposure

The component operates in an environment containing ionizing radiation, such as space or a nuclear facility.

Radiation interaction

Radiation can create defects or trapped charges in optical materials, potentially increasing attenuation or modifying the component's optical or electrical properties.

Performance preservation

Radiation-hardened materials and designs limit these effects, allowing the component to maintain its required performance over the intended radiation dose and operating lifetime.
