What are Fiber-Based Sensors for Harsh Environments?
Fiber-based sensors for harsh environments are optical sensing systems that use specially designed optical fibers to measure physical parameters in extreme conditions, such as high temperatures or high radiation levels. They can provide reliable measurements where conventional electronic sensors may be difficult to deploy.
Optical fibers are particularly suited to these environments because they are lightweight, immune to electromagnetic interference, and can operate over wide temperature ranges. Depending on the application, radiation-hardened fibers, specialized coatings, FBGs, or other fiber-optic sensing technologies can be used.
HOW Fiber-Based Sensors for Harsh Environments Work
The principle can be understood through three main steps:
Sensing
A physical parameter such as temperature, strain, radiation, or pressure affects the optical properties of the fiber or a sensing element integrated into it.
Optical signal transmission
Light is transmitted through the fiber. Changes caused by the measured parameter modify characteristics of the optical signal, such as its wavelength, phase, or intensity.
Measurement
An optical interrogation system detects these changes and converts them into a quantitative measurement. Distributed fiber sensing can also provide measurements along the length of the fiber rather than at a single point
