What are Flight-Proven (TRL9) Optical Components?

Flight-proven (TRL9) optical components are photonic components that have reached Technology Readiness Level 9, meaning the technology has been successfully demonstrated in an actual operational environment. In space, this means the optical component has been qualified for the required conditions and has successfully flown on a mission.

Unlike a component validated only through laboratory or qualification testing, a flight-proven component benefits from real mission heritage, providing evidence of its reliability and performance under the demanding conditions of space.

HOW Flight-Proven (TRL9) Optical Components Work

TRL9 describes the maturity and validation status of a technology rather than a specific optical operating principle. It can be understood through three main steps:

Qualification

The component undergoes environmental and performance testing designed to reproduce the conditions it will encounter in operation, such as vibration, shock, temperature variations, and radiation.

Flight validation

The qualified component is integrated into an operational system and deployed in its intended environment, such as a satellite or spacecraft.

Operational heritage

Successful operation in a real mission demonstrates that the technology performs as intended in its target environment, providing flight heritage and supporting its use in subsequent missions.
