What is Erbium?
Erbium is a rare-earth element used as a dopant in optical fibers to provide optical gain, particularly around the 1.5 µm wavelength range. Erbium-doped fibers are widely used in fiber amplifiers and lasers because their emission range is well suited to important telecommunications and photonics wavelengths.
When incorporated into a silica fiber, erbium ions absorb energy from a pump source and release it through stimulated emission, enabling optical signals to be amplified directly within the fiber.

1.5 µm emission
Erbium provides optical gain around the 1.5 µm region, making it particularly relevant to C-band and L-band optical amplification.
Efficient optical amplification
Erbium-doped fibers can provide high optical gain while maintaining the advantages of a fiber-based architecture, including compactness and good beam quality.
Flexible fiber architectures
Erbium can be used alone or combined with ytterbium to improve pump absorption and enable higher-power fiber amplifiers.
