What is An IMOB?

(Integrated Micro-Optical Bench)

An Integrated Micro-Optical Bench (IMOB) is an advanced packaging technology that mounts, aligns, and integrates multiple miniature optical components onto a single, solid substrate (the "bench"). Unlike traditional optical setups that rely on large, separate tables and mechanical mounts, an IMOB scales down free-space optics—such as lasers, lenses, waveplates, and crystals—into a rugged, sub-millimeter scale module.

Its primary purpose is to combine the high performance of free-space optics with the compact, vibration-proof, and mass-producible benefits of integrated chip packaging.

HOW an IMOB Works

An IMOB functions as a unified mechanical and optical foundation, transforming individual parts into a monolithic system through three main steps:

Substrate Precision Engineering

The foundation of the bench is carved from a highly stable material, such as silicon, fused silica, or specialized ceramics, which resists expanding or shrinking when temperatures change. Using semiconductor fabrication techniques, microscopic channels, alignment slots, and reflective turning mirrors are etched directly into this base with nanometer-level precision.

Automated Micro-Placement

Miniature optical components (such as laser diodes, isolators, splitters, and GRIN lenses) are picked and placed into their designated slots on the bench. Instead of manual adjustment, the physical shapes of the etched slots automatically guide the parts into the correct optical path. They are then permanently bonded using specialized, low-shrinkage epoxy or laser welding.

Protected Light Routing

Once assembled, the light traveling through the IMOB hops from component to component across tiny free-space gaps inside the chip. Because the entire bench is sealed inside a compact, airtight (hermetic) housing, the delicate alignment is completely protected from dust, moisture, and intense physical vibrations.
