What is an Optical Pulse Shaper & Laser Front End?

An optical pulse shaper and laser front end is an optical system used to generate, control, and precisely shape laser pulses before they are amplified or sent to an experimental setup. It can control parameters such as pulse duration, temporal profile, contrast, and repetition rate.

These systems are particularly important for high-energy and high-power laser facilities, where the precise temporal shape of the input pulse can directly affect the performance, stability, and repeatability of an experiment. Exail's ModBox Front-End uses high-speed LiNbO₃ modulation technology to generate controlled optical pulses with sub-nanosecond resolution.

HOW An Optical Pulse Shaper & Laser Front End Works

The operation can be understood through three main steps:

Laser signal generation

A continuous or pulsed laser provides the initial optical signal used as the seed for the system.

Pulse shaping

A high-speed electro-optic modulator, typically based on lithium niobate, rapidly controls the optical intensity to generate a defined temporal pulse shape. A waveform generator provides the required electrical drive signal.

Pulse stabilization

A Modulator Bias Controller (MBC) and other control electronics maintain the required modulation conditions, ensuring stable pulse characteristics and high extinction ratio over time.
