What is Polyimide?

Polyimide is a high-performance polymer coating used to protect optical fibers in demanding environments. It provides mechanical protection while offering high-temperature resistance, radiation tolerance, and good chemical resistance compared with conventional acrylate coatings.

Polyimide-coated fibers can operate continuously at temperatures up to around 300°C and can also withstand cryogenic conditions down to approximately -196°C. This makes polyimide particularly suitable when optical fibers must maintain reliable performance under extreme temperature or radiation conditions.

HOW Polyimide Works

The protective function of a polyimide coating can be understood through three key properties:

Thermal protection

Polyimide maintains its mechanical and protective properties across a wide temperature range, enabling fiber operation well beyond the typical limits of standard acrylate coatings.

Environmental resistance

The coating provides good resistance to radiation and many chemicals, helping protect the underlying glass fiber in harsh environments.

Mechanical protection

Polyimide forms a thin protective layer around the fiber, improving resistance to mechanical stress while allowing a smaller overall fiber diameter than conventional coated fibers.
