Refractive Index Profile

What is a Refractive Index Profile?

A Refractive Index Profile describes how the refractive index varies across the cross-section of an optical fiber, from the center of the core through the cladding. It is a fundamental parameter that determines how light is guided within the fiber and influences properties such as mode propagation, numerical aperture, dispersion, and beam quality.

Different profiles, such as step-index and graded-index designs, can be engineered to meet specific optical performance requirements.

HOW a Refractive Index Profile Works

The refractive index profile determines how light is confined and propagates within an optical fiber. By controlling how the refractive index changes between the core and cladding, fiber designers can tailor the fiber's guiding and propagation characteristics.

Index distribution

The refractive index is defined across the fiber cross-section, with the core and cladding having different refractive indices.

Light guidance

The refractive index difference between the core and cladding determines how strongly light is confined within the core.

Optical performance

The shape and magnitude of the index profile influence the fiber's numerical aperture, modal properties, dispersion, and propagation behavior.
