What is an Ultra-Broadband Tunable Laser?
An ultra-broadband tunable laser is a laser source capable of generating light across a very wide wavelength range, with the output wavelength adjustable according to the requirements of the application. It combines broad spectral coverage with the coherence, directionality, and controllability of laser light.
Unlike a fixed-wavelength laser, a tunable source can select or sweep through different wavelengths. This makes ultra-broadband tunable lasers particularly useful when a system needs to interrogate different spectral regions, analyze wavelength-dependent phenomena, or adapt its optical output during operation.
HOW an Ultra-Broadband Tunable Laser Works
The principle can be understood through three main steps:
Broadband light generation
A laser architecture generates or amplifies light over a wide spectral range.
Wavelength selection
An optical filtering or tuning mechanism selects the desired wavelength from the available spectrum.
Tunable output
The selected wavelength is delivered as a controlled laser signal. By adjusting the tuning mechanism, the source can operate at different wavelengths or sweep across a defined spectral range.
