What is an Optical Frequency Comb?
An optical frequency comb is a laser source that generates a spectrum of many precisely spaced, narrow optical frequencies, resembling the teeth of a comb. The frequencies are separated by a constant repetition rate, creating a highly stable link between optical and radio-frequency domains.
Optical frequency combs provide an accurate way to measure, compare, and distribute optical frequencies. They are widely used in precision metrology, optical clocks, time and frequency transfer, spectroscopy, and quantum technologies.
HOW an Optical Frequency Comb Works
An optical frequency comb converts a stable pulsed or continuous-wave optical source into a set of precisely controlled, equally spaced optical frequencies. The spacing and absolute position of the comb lines can be stabilized to provide an accurate frequency reference.
Comb generation
A mode-locked laser or another nonlinear optical system generates a series of regularly spaced optical frequencies.
Frequency stabilization
The repetition rate and carrier-envelope offset frequency can be controlled to precisely define the position of the comb lines.
Frequency measurement and transfer
The stable comb links optical frequencies to radio frequencies, enabling highly precise frequency comparison, measurement, and distribution.
