What is Optical Gain?
Optical Gain is the increase in optical power or intensity that occurs when light passes through a gain medium, such as a rare-earth doped fiber. It is the fundamental mechanism that enables optical amplification and laser generation.
Optical gain occurs when the gain medium transfers stored energy to an optical signal through stimulated emission, compensating for losses and increasing the strength of the signal.
HOW Optical Gain Works
Optical gain is generated when stimulated emission produces more optical power than is lost through absorption and other propagation losses. In fiber lasers and amplifiers, this process is achieved by optically pumping a gain medium.
Energy pumping
A pump laser supplies energy to the gain medium, exciting the active ions to higher energy states.
Stimulated emission
An optical signal interacts with the excited ions, causing them to emit photons with the same wavelength, phase, and direction as the signal.
Signal amplification
As the signal propagates through the gain medium, the additional photons increase its optical power. When the gain exceeds system losses, amplification or laser oscillation can occur.
