What is a Pump Laser?
A Pump Laser is a laser source used to provide optical energy to a gain medium, such as a rare-earth doped fiber, enabling optical amplification or laser generation. The pump wavelength is selected to match the absorption characteristics of the active ions in the gain medium.
Pump lasers are essential components in fiber lasers and optical amplifiers, where they provide the energy required to achieve optical gain.
HOW a Pump Laser Works
A pump laser transfers optical energy to the active medium, exciting its ions and creating the conditions required for stimulated emission. The efficiency and wavelength of the pump source directly influence the performance of the resulting laser or amplifier.
Optical pumping
The pump laser injects light at a specific wavelength into the gain medium.
Energy absorption
Active ions within the gain medium absorb the pump photons and move to higher energy states.
Optical gain
The excited ions can then transfer their energy to the signal through stimulated emission, producing amplification or laser emission.
