What is Free-Space Micro-Optics?

Free-space micro-optics is an optical integration approach in which miniature optical components are precisely assembled and aligned in free space to perform one or several optical functions within a compact module. Unlike conventional fiber-only assemblies, the light propagates between optical elements without being confined to a fiber at every stage.

This approach makes it possible to combine functions such as beam splitting, combining, switching, polarization control, wavelength manipulation, and interferometry in compact and robust optical assemblies. It is particularly valuable when complex optical setups need to be miniaturized while maintaining stable optical alignment and performance.

HOW Free-Space Micro-Optics Work

The technology can be understood through three main steps:

Optical function selection

Individual optical elements such as lenses, waveplates, mirrors, splitters, or optical switches are selected according to the required function.

Precision alignment and assembly

The components are positioned with high precision so that the optical beam follows the required path through the different elements. They are then assembled into a compact module designed to preserve alignment over time and temperature variations.

Fiber coupling and integration

The free-space optical assembly can be coupled to optical fibers at its input and output, transforming a complex laboratory setup into a compact, stable and often fibered subsystem.
