What is Holmium?
Holmium is a rare-earth element used as a dopant in optical fibers to provide optical gain around the 2 µm wavelength region. Holmium-doped fibers are used as gain media for fiber lasers and amplifiers where operation at longer infrared wavelengths is required.
Holmium can be used alone or in combination with thulium to develop efficient fiber-based laser sources around 2 µm, a spectral region of interest for applications requiring high optical power or specific interactions with materials and biological tissue.
key properties of Holmium
~2 µm emission
Holmium provides laser emission around the 2 µm region, including wavelengths close to 2.05–2.1 µm.
Suitable for high-power operation
Holmium-doped fibers can support high-power laser architectures while retaining the compact and efficient characteristics of fiber-based systems.
Thulium co-doping
Holmium can be combined with thulium to enable efficient energy transfer and pumping schemes for 2 µm fiber lasers.
