What is TRL?

(Technology Readiness Level)

Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is a universally recognized measurement system used to assess the maturity level of a developing technology during its acquisition, research, and development phases. Originally pioneered by NASA in the 1970s, the framework rates components, materials, or software on a standardized scale from 1 to 9.

Its primary purpose is to provide a consistent metric for engineering teams, manufacturers, and buyers to objectively evaluate technical risk, track deployment milestones, and quantify the reliability of components destined for high-stakes operating environments.

HOW the TRL Scale Works

The TRL framework evaluates a technology's journey from a conceptual baseline to successful field operation through nine sequential milestones, grouped into three main development stages:

Research and Feasibility (TRL 1 - TRL 3)

  • TRL 1: Basic principles observed and reported. The lowest level of technology readiness where scientific research begins translating into applied research and development.
  • TRL 2: Technology concept and/or application formulated. Practical applications are identified, though proofs of concept remain analytical or speculative.
  • TRL 3: Analytical and experimental critical function and/or characteristic proof of concept. Active research and development initiate, verifying the core concept via laboratory-based analytical studies.

Validation and Prototyping (TRL 4 - TRL 6)

  • TRL 4: Component and/or breadboard validation in laboratory environment. Basic technological components are integrated to establish that they work together in a controlled lab setup.
  • TRL 5: Component and/or breadboard validation in relevant environment. The baseline reliability increases as the components are tested in a simulated configuration that closely mimics real-world conditions.
  • TRL 6: System/subsystem model or prototype demonstration in a relevant environment. A fully functional prototype or representative model is rigorously tested in a highly realistic operational environment (such as vacuum chambers, thermal testing, or high-vibration states).

Deployment and Flight Heritage (TRL 7 - TRL 9)

  • TRL 7: System prototype demonstration in an operational environment. The actual system prototype is tested directly in its final operating environment, such as a flight demonstration or space launch platform.
  • TRL 8: Actual system completed and qualified through test and demonstration. The technology is proven to work in its final configuration under expected operational conditions. This includes final end-of-line verification testing.
  • TRL 9: Actual system proven through successful mission operations. The highest readiness level. The component has achieved full "flight heritage," performing reliably over its intended mission lifecycle under actual operating conditions.
