One laser source, a broad spectrum of possibilities
What is a Supercontinuum Laser?
A
supercontinuum laser generates a broad, continuous optical spectrum from laser
light that propagates through a nonlinear medium, typically a specially
selected optical fiber. Through nonlinear optical effects, the initial light is
broadened across a wide range of wavelengths.
Unlike a conventional laser source designed to emit within a relatively narrow spectral band, a supercontinuum laser can provide broadband output from a single source. The spectral coverage, optical power and pulse characteristics depend on the laser architecture and configuration.
This
combination of broadband illumination and laser-based performance makes
supercontinuum sources useful for applications where access to multiple
wavelengths is essential.
Broadband Laser Sources for Greater Spectral Flexibility
Supercontinuum Lasers vs. Conventional Laser Sources
Conventional
laser sources are often selected for a specific wavelength or a limited
spectral range. Supercontinuum lasers offer a different approach: they provide
broad spectral coverage from a single source, potentially reducing the need to
combine multiple individual lasers.
Depending
on the system, this can offer several advantages:
- Broader spectral access: investigate samples or materials across a wide range of wavelengths.
- Greater experimental flexibility: adapt optical setups to different measurement requirements without relying on multiple narrowband sources.
- Simplified optical architectures: use a broadband source where an application would otherwise require several laser wavelengths.
- Application-specific configurations: select a source according to spectral range, output power, pulse characteristics and integration requirements.
The right choice depends on the wavelength range, spectral power requirements, temporal characteristics and measurement technique involved.
Supporting more demanding optical measurements
LEUKOS supercontinuum laser sources can support a range of applications in research, advanced instrumentation and industry. The most suitable configuration depends on the spectral range and performance requirements of each application.
Choose a Supercontinuum Laser That Fits Your System
Selecting the right source starts with the requirements of the application. Consider the following parameters when comparing LEUKOS supercontinuum laser solutions.
Identify the wavelengths required by your measurement or imaging technique, from UV–VIS–NIR through to the mid-infrared. The available spectral coverage varies by product.
Consider
the optical power and spectral power requirements of your application, as well
as the pulse duration and repetition rate where relevant.
For time-resolved experiments or synchronized optical systems, determine whether external triggering, low timing jitter or a specific pulse configuration is required.
Consider the space available, the required output configuration and how the source will connect to the rest of the optical setup. Dedicated accessories can help adapt beam delivery and spectral selection to system requirements.
