What is a Polarization Switch?
A polarization switch is an optical device that selectively changes the polarization state of light between two or more defined states. It enables fast, controlled switching of polarization and is used in photonic systems where the polarization of an optical signal needs to be dynamically controlled.
Polarization switches can be implemented using electro-optic or other optical technologies. They are particularly useful for controlling polarization in optical communication, sensing, and quantum photonics systems.
HOW A Polarization Switch Works
The operation of a polarization switch can be understood through three main steps:
Polarization control
An incoming optical signal is prepared with a defined polarization state before entering the switching element.
State switching
An electrical or optical control signal changes the optical properties of the switching element, causing the polarization state to rotate or switch between defined states.
Controlled output
The resulting polarization state is selected according to the control signal, allowing the same optical path to transmit light with different polarization states.
