What is Thulium?
Thulium is a rare-earth element used as a dopant in optical fibers to provide optical gain at wavelengths around the 2 µm spectral region. Thulium-doped fibers are used as gain media for fiber lasers and amplifiers, particularly where longer-wavelength infrared emission is required.
Thulium offers broad emission characteristics and can support efficient laser operation around 1.9–2.0 µm, making it an important rare-earth dopant for specialized laser sources and high-power fiber-based systems
key properties of Thulium
~2 µm emission
Thulium provides optical gain in the 1.8–2.1 µm region, including wavelengths around 2 µm that are relevant to several laser applications.
Broad absorption and emission bands
Thulium offers multiple pump and emission pathways, providing flexibility in the design of fiber lasers and amplifiers.
High-power potential
Thulium-doped fibers can be engineered for high-power operation and are well suited to fiber-based architectures requiring efficient power scaling.
