FSO - Free-Space Optical Communication

What is FSO?
(Free-Space Optical Communication)
Free-Space Optical Communication (FSO) is a wireless communication technology that transmits data using light through free space rather than a physical fiber or electrical cable. FSO systems typically use lasers to transmit highly directional optical signals between two points.
FSO can provide high data rates, low latency, and secure, interference-resistant communication, making it particularly attractive for satellite communications, ground-to-satellite links, and other environments where fiber connections are impractical.
How Free-Space Optical Communication Works
Free-Space Optical Communication works by encoding information onto an optical carrier and transmitting the modulated light beam through free space to a receiver. The system must maintain accurate beam pointing and alignment to ensure communication.
Optical signal generation
A laser generates a stable optical carrier, which is modulated to encode the information to be transmitted.
Free-space transmission
The modulated optical beam is directed through free space using optical components such as telescopes, mirrors, or beam steering systems.
Signal reception
A receiving optical system collects the transmitted beam and converts the optical signal into an electrical signal for data processing.
