What is Optical Pumping?
Optical Pumping is the process of using light to transfer energy to atoms, ions, or other active particles, moving them into higher energy states. It is a fundamental technique for creating the population inversion required for laser generation and optical amplification.
In photonics, optical pumping is commonly achieved using a pump laser whose wavelength is matched to an absorption transition of the gain medium.
HOW Optical Pumping Works
Optical pumping works by using photons from a pump source to excite atoms or ions into higher energy states. The resulting excited-state population can then be used to generate or amplify optical signals.
Pump absorption
The active atoms or ions absorb photons from the pump laser at a suitable wavelength.
Excitation
The absorbed energy moves the particles from a lower energy state to a higher energy state.
Population preparation
The excited particles create the conditions required for stimulated emission, enabling optical amplification or laser generation.
